Reddit gets a bad rap. When covered in the press, the media focuses on posting and pumping meme stocks or ridiculing members of the r / antiwork group, accusing them of being lazy anti-capitalists.
Something beautiful happened over the weekend. About five million members of the r / place 2022 subreddit have brought the world together and created an industrial project.
Since last Friday, Reddit users have collectively created a huge collaborative industry that has become a viral phenomenon. The open canvas allows members to post a single, tiny, colorful pixel every five minutes. At a rate of 2.5 million tiles per hour, more than 6 million users have installed more than 72 million tiles. Communities outside of Reddit, such as Discord and Twitch, also helped with the project.
The group’s slogan – which has nearly five million members – reads, “Someone has visited a canvas before ৷ / A place where collections have made more. . ”
The project was started on April Fool’s Day 2017 by Josh Wardle, who created the ubiquitous addictive world game Wordle. The initial test lasted 72 hours. More than one million users edited the canvas, laying a total of an estimated 16 million tiles.
The way it works is that one person can install a tile every five minutes. Timelines have been set to avoid domination of any individual or group joint industrial installation. It is a collaborative effort, although there is competition between groups to target their own work.
The result was a chaotic yet stunning and meaningful joint work of art. With all the hatred, anger and violence spreading in our world, it’s nice to see people around the world come together to do something special.
In light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the site is welcome r / PlaceUkraine To help organize and develop the Ukrainian presence in r / Place. Nomad, a moderator, among others, helped ensure Ukraine’s representation. An alliance was formed to protect their work. Since r / Place was “extremely chaotic”, there were groups who turned to tribal activities and tried to attack the contributions of some countries.
“To secure the space we have, we need to work with other communities to ensure that our people protect our space at all times of the day,” Nomad wrote. It comes down to similar discussions in real life, where we can offer something and get something in return. Trust me, it’s not funny. ”
He added, “R / Place is a place of compromise and team work. Those who do not work with others are attacked by communities like The Void and, frankly, we do not want any works of art created by our wonderful designers. Destroyed.” And “Let’s work together towards the common goal of presenting Ukrainian culture in the best possible way and educating the world about what is happening.”
