EY revives big-budget corporate Shindig with Florida theme park trip

EY flew more than 2,000 workers and their colleagues to Florida for a shingle at a Universal Studios theme park this week, signaling the return of big-budget corporate bonding events after the epidemic.

In a futures analysis of the business trip last May, EY predicted the completion of the big event in the short term, saying the 1,000-person gathering was likely to split into multiple regional locations.

Reducing business travel, which accounts for 75 percent of EY’s carbon output, is the first point of the firm’s plan to reduce net emissions to zero in the next three years.

EY Orlando declined to confirm the estimated carbon footprint of the event but said it was “modeled on our plan to have a net zero by 2025”.

The event in Orlando was held in 150 countries by EY for newly promoted partners and their partners over the past two years. Prior to the epidemic, annual jamborees were held in cities such as Shanghai, Singapore, and Barcelona. In an effort to reduce emissions, large consultancies such as KPMG, Deloitte and BCG have launched online tools that show the CO2 impact of their travel plans before booking employees. Many businesses are avoiding international travel by hosting meetings online.

But EY defended the private gathering, saying: “Staying together, connecting and training is very important for maintaining our culture and giving our people an exceptional experience.” The event included training sessions, business updates and keynote speeches from firm leaders and external speakers, it says.

The EY event occurred when airlines reported partial recovery on business trips, with American Airlines returning to two-thirds of the 2019 level of business bookings.
