Anna Davis, 16, is the youngest Augusta amateur winner in high school

Anna Davis poses with the trophy after winning the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament

Augusta, the 16-year-old Anna Davis, finished in a dramatic fashion for the national women’s amateur to become the youngest champion in the history of the event by shooting 70-76-69.

Davis, a sophomore from high school, overcame a two-stroke deficit through the final round of his three-under-par 69 at Augusta National.

With more than 54 holes, Davis finished with an under-par 215 total, going off the field in one stroke. Davis, ranked 100th in the world amateur golf rankings, had four birdies in the final round, including three birdies on the top five holes of the back nine.

“I’m still a little shocked,” Davis said. “I don’t think it’s still processed that I’ve won here. It’s pretty surreal, to be honest. I’m speechless. “

He deliberately worked around the Augusta National Golf Club while tying the second lowest score of the day.

On the biggest stage he has played, Davis holds a part of the lead in the opening round at the Champions Retreat. As he accepted the Augusta National Golf Club challenge, the bets got bigger. On the second and ninth he had a birdie and walked four-foot at 12 after landing his 8-inch iron from the hole. Davis added another 13, to capture a portion of the lead.

“I think playing in such tournaments and playing junior golf from such a young age, my main goal has always been to be the best in the world,” Davis said.

Co-leaders Beatrice Wallin and Latanna Stone crashed during their final round, opening the door for Davis to win.

Stone started his day tied at the top and led two strokes to play after a birdie at 16, but a double-bogey at 17 and a bogey at 18 left him behind Davis.

“It’s just heartbreaking,” said Stone, who made her Augusta national female amateur debut. “I knew where I stood on the 17th and I was just thinking equivalent.

“I was trying to be aggressive and lost it, I thought I could get it back to 1, but there’s a lot going on in my head about where I was.”

Stone and Sweden’s Ingrid Lindblad finished second at 216.
