Douglas Mills Jr. and Scarlett seemed to have a complete disagreement and provided some of the most dramatic moments of the show.
“We’re almost nothing like that,” Scarlett said.
Douglas couldn’t remember the lines of their song “Rewrite the Stars” and at one point Scarlett left.
“It’s hard for me to learn music really fast,” he said.
Scarlett blames her struggling response to her past bad experiences with other singers.
While they were working on it, Douglas stumbled through the song when the couple hit the stage.
“Death by song,” said Katy Perry. “That song was not the right song. We can say you don’t really know it. “
Despite their struggles, Katie said they are moving forward thanks to “some moments in the past and how beautiful they were.”
Christian Guardino and Nicolina could be paired at night with their “The Prayer” performance.
Lionel Richie told them after the performance, “I have to tell you when you can stand on a stage under pressure and we are fascinated by how you play with each other.
Once they learn who their partner is, the contestants don’t have much time to prepare for the duet. Some contestants worked late into the night trying to get their performances together.
“I’m very tired,” Cole Hallman said after a long night’s practice with Cadence Baker.
They sang ‘How Sweet It Is’ by James Taylor, but their performance was, according to Luke Bryan, “irresistible” compared to their previous appearance.
Cole admits that his voice is moving and the judges decide that he has reached the end of his idol journey.
Perhaps the most inspiring moment of the night came when Kelsey Dolin, who is playing for the first time and has no experience on stage, partnered with former Miss America Betty Maxwell.
Despite moving forward, Kelsey lacks confidence throughout the season.
“You are a rough diamond. All you have to do is shake off that dust, ”Katy Perry told him.
Betty worked with Kelsey on choreography and tuned in, hoping to boost her confidence, but was nervous about getting into acting.
Their duet in Pink’s “Just Give Me a Reason” made Lionel Richie cry.
“I was worried for a moment because I thought you wouldn’t get on the show,” he said. “You broke down. You were the melody and the attitude and the choreography and now who are you?
Katy Perry praised Betty for drawing the best that could be Kelsey.
You can now watch more duets from the show streaming on Hulu.
The search for the next idol continues with the Showstopper Round on Monday night as contestants take to the stage for the first time with a band and the field shrinks to the top 24.
See next American Idol Monday at 8 pm ET / PT 7 pm CT at your local ABC station and the next day at Hulu.
